Coin collecting what a great and interesting hobby to get into.

Hi, welcome to this weeks article that has been written by: Cory Haasnoot.
Cory collects coins and is quite an expert on the subject as you will see by his article .

Cory will give you tips on.

• Which coins to collect

• Coin grading

• How to care for your coins.

If any one would like to share their tips with us please email to chris.collectibles@googlemail.com

Over to Cory.

Coin collecting what a great and interesting hobby to get into. Collecting coins is enjoyed by both young and old.
People have been collecting things for century's and nothing has been collected more than coins. There is so much wonderful history in coins that how can one resist wanting different specimens. There are varieties of avenues you can go when deciding which types of coins you want to collect.

There are commemorative coins which depicted certain milestones in history. Government issued coins which are used as currency. There are error coins which are coins that were released to the public but have errors on them that didn't get caught at the mint. Depending on what kind of error they are will determine the value of these coins.

Just about any topic you can think of you will be able to find a coin that pertains to that topic. Coins have been made out of just about every kind of metal you can think of.
There are gold coins, silver coins, platinum coins, aluminium coins, copper coins and steal coins. These are just some of the main metal composites coins are made out of.

There are some basics you will want to learn before venturing out and buying coins for your collection. You will want to learn about coin grading which is finding out what a certain coin is worth and why it is worth that. Knowing some grading of coins will help you from not being ripped off when you go to buy your coins because you will know what to look for.

You will also want to know how to care for your coins so you can protect them from the elements and enjoy them for years to come. You can damage coins very easily if you do not have the right coin collecting supplies. Knowing what to look for when purchasing your coins and what supplies you need to enjoy your coins and keep them safe when handling them will get you started on the road to the wonderful world of coin collecting.

No matter what reason you collect coins for be it for the adventure and treasure hunt aspect of it or for the financial gain you can get by investing in coins you can always find the right coin for you because there are so many different varieties, styles and metal compositions to choose from. Coins have been made for just about every topic you can think of.

A fun way to look for coins is with a metal detector. You can use these on the beach or in parks wherever there have been people around and you can detect metal objects including coins that people may have dropped or left behind.
So, you can see there are many ways to enjoy collecting coins and I hope you find your own way of collecting coins. I enjoy coin collecting for the history that comes with every coin that I collect.

Get out there and enjoy this great hobby. If you are interested and would like to know more about coin collecting, go to Cory Haasnoot coin collecting values

Star Wars Revisited and Scams to Avoid at Off-Line Auction

This week Star Wars revisited and scams to avoid at off-line auction.

In my post of 20th December titled Tips for making Money in 2007 I pointed out

How this year is the 30th anniversary of Star Wars and anything connected to the entertaining films should be making good money. It seems I understated good money.

At a London auction on Tuesday 6th March the cloak worn by Sir Alec Guinness

To play Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars was sold for £54,000. The lot was the highlight in the auction of some 400 film and TV outfits, a packed saleroom at Bonhams in Knightsbridge saw individual items fetch up to 20 times their estimated price.

In the era we live in now of film, TV and celebrity star it seems that anything connected to those subjects will make you money In the UK we have a much loved TV program called Only Fools and Horses staring David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst in one episode they dressed up as Batman and Robin at the same auction the costumes were sold for £10,200. So were could we get some memorabilia for ourselves, well the obvious place to start is eBay and I have included two other sites for you to look at.

Scams to Avoid at Auction. The Switch.

Okay my thanks once again to Phil of Basildon for his relevant information on this.

First off you can not tar all auction houses with the same brush most run an honest and straight forward auction, but there are some that don't and you need to be aware

Of the scams.

· The switch

You visit the auction and a box of mixed collectibles catches your eye , you notice that while most of the content is rubbish there are one or two items that are valuable

And basically make the lot worth bidding for .

You make your bid win the lot , happy you pay your money ,return to your lot and find that one or two individual items you wanted have disappeared . Stolen or more likely switched to another lot, someone else has also spotted the same items as you and has put the interesting articles into another lot that (a) they know that no one will bid on this and (b)

They get to pay a lot less for the items.

Phil says that at the smaller auction this type of thing goes on all the time. Phil now regularly tries to take a friend with him when he goes to auction He says he has lost count of the number of times he has got home to find items he knew were in the lot go missing.

Remember the auction company is not liable for the safety of your goods after the sale ,once the hammer goes down there yours so be alert.

Before you bid on anything at an auction read the terms and conditions of the auction house .You need to be aware that on top of your winning bid there will be charges, such as buyer's commission and statutory taxes.

· Off the Wall

This rarely happens in reputable auction houses but else where well!

Auction houses make money in a number of ways, two of these are they charge a flat fee to put an item into auction and then charge a % of the final price. So the higher they can get a bid the more the house makes.

Off the wall means precisely that , you might be the only one bidding on an item but a dishonest auctioneer will be reading your face to see how far he can push you to bid,

And he will literally be taking bids off the wall. To counter this confuse him , don't rush to bid try to look as if you are losing interest at every bidding stage.

I hope the above has been helpful to you, remember not all auction houses are dishonest but these and other scams to happen , just be aware of them.

Next week 5 tips on buying at offline auctions.

Have a good week .

Happy Hunting

Tips For Making Money Selling Collectibles

Welcome to this week's article , before I start I would especially like to thank all of you who got in touch about the informative article (Look Out There’s a Thief about) it seems that a few of you have fallen prey to this scam .. Thanks also to Phil in Basildon Essex who wrote to me about another scam that reportedly happens in the off-line world of auctions I will be doing an article for you on this next week. If you would like to get in touch and share some of your tips or interesting stories with us go to http://collectible.chris-allan.com/
fill in your name and e --mail address and I will get back to you.

Okay on to this week's article. Tips For Making Money Selling Collectibles .
The first problem that tackles many of us is exactly what collectibles are making money and more importantly what collectibles are selling. Now like many of you out there i have my own favourite items to collect, mine being Tea pot's (don't ask) and Lladro. But with the arrival of the Internet and in particular the online auctions and again in particular eBay people have been given an unexpected opportunity to make a very good second income or have made selling collectibles in to a full-time business.

Want to make money 24/7 365 Days a Year

Even While You Sleep ?

Ask any internet marketer what you need to make money on-line and the first answer you get is you need a web site, than you need a hosting account then you need a suitable product , then you ! At this stage most people switch off, all they can see is money, hundreds of pounds leaving their bank accounts
What if there was another way?

A way where every thing was done for you, all you had to do is join a couple of free programs copy and paste a bit of code and you had your own 24/7 cash generating machine. Well now there is.

Back to the Article

The significant problem here is knowing what to sell? Because the collectible market is huge, just go to collectibles on eBay put collectibles in the search engine and you'll get a vast combination of different items that people collect, the secret here is to find out which ones are selling . One way of doing this is to go to each individual page and in the advanced search click on highest finishing prices, this will give you an overall idea of what that particular collectible is selling for and how many people were looking to buy. But here is a little known tip that can cleverly save you hours of research; you need to put this URL into your browser http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/hotitems.pdf
And this will bring up the hottest item report for that month, it is made from an American perspective but the results work equally well in the UK anyway if something is worth selling it's worth selling worldwide.
You will find that hot products are listed by multiple category and subcategory's you'll find that some category's feature several times in the hot list and these are the most important of all to focus on as obviously these are the most popular items. Well that's it for this week I hope this information has been helpful to you. Please remember that if you would like to get in contact and pass on some of your tips and stories to other collectors then click on http://collectible.chris-allan.com/ send us an email we would love to hear from you,

Happy hunting

Now That's What I Call Recycling !

About this time last year i popped into my friends Dave for a cup of tea , Dave was getting ready to put his house on the market .As I walked in to his kitchen I could not believe my eye's there on the kitchen table were piles of bank notes, fivers ,teners , twenty's ,” what you going to do with all those Dave” I ask “ Taking them down the local tip to recycle them “ was his reply. “You have got to be mad Dave there are hundreds if not thousand's of pounds laying there” .Dave looked at the table looked back at me “Chris there just piles of Susan's and mine old magazines they have been sitting up in the spare room accumulating dust for years “ .

I walked over to the table, piles of Vogue , People Magazine , I guessed they were Sue's and then Dave’s pile Motor Mechanics , Classic Car , Play Boy I looked over at Dave “yea I thought about keeping those one's” he said with a smile , and then a pile of gardening magazines.

I started Dave's computer up, and typed in eBay , then put magazines in the search box , Dave was amazed at the result . I then put Vogue in the search box and Dave's eyes lit up , Play Boy next same results .

We went back into the kitchen Dave made the tea , even before Dave said anything I could see the obvious questions in his face . There are people out there who are serious collectors of all type's of magazine's ,some may need a certain issue to complete a set , some especially students may need them for a project , Vogue for example are sought after by students and collectors of vintage fashion and fashion history .

Look Dave I could spend hours telling you different ways to make decent money out of those old magazines , why not do yourself a favour and have a look at Avril Harper's ebook
Make Money Tearing Up Old Books and Magazines and Selling Them On eBay.

An e what said Dave, an ebook Dave its just like a real book but you download them off the Internet read them on your computer or print them off, any time day or night 365 day's a year.

“And what is this ebook thingy about again “said Dave , well look at the title and guess I told him.

Dave and Sue sold there house and when they moved there was a very smaller stack of magazines that went with them and no none of them went to the local tip , and they now also have a very lucrative part-time business recycling old magazines and books .

Untill next week Happy Hunting

Look out Look out There's a Thief About

With the development of the Internet , and especially the rapid growth of on line auctions it was only a question of time, when and not if the thieves would strike.

With on line auctions I am afraid that thieves (some call them fraudsters but i genuinely consider that sounds to nice) operate both as buyers and sellers and the bottom line is to be very vigilant , Some are very clever.
One way as a buyer you can give yourself extra protection is If the item you are buying
is over £100 then were possible buy with a credit card.
If things go wrong then you have added protection from your card company and you should be able claim back your money if your purchase does not turn out to be what it was described as or not fit for the purpose it was meant for or you do not receive it at all.
And always remember if something looks to good to be true then it probably is.

The broken item scam and how to protect yourself.

This scam recently happened to a friend of mine Paul but like a good boy scout he was prepared ..
Paul collects and trades in Lladro , very beautiful and fragile handcrafted figurines of porcelain. To add significant value to their collections Lladro will only make a fixed number of any one piece , and then make them retired.
So as you can expect these pieces increase in value and become quite rare.

Paul has been trading in Lladro for many years , but since the development of the on-line auctions he has exclusively traded on line making an exceptional living.
On a recent auction of his for a piece called the gossips (see picture) the bidding was quite vigour's , it seemed that one person was going to buy the item no matter what. Over bidding what anyone else was prepared to pay , nothing unusual in this in fact this is the fortunate position any trader dreams off.

Make Money Tearing Up Old Books and Magazines and Selling Them On eBay

For the past few years I've been tearing up old books and magazines and selling them on eBay and generating very good profits. I'll show you how to do exactly the same.

So say's eBay Powerseller Avril Harper.
You could be making money from items other people throw into their rubbish bins each day!
What other people are saying about Avril's book.

"I brought and downloaded your 'Make money tearing up old books & mags' eBook yesterday and thought it one of the most useful & useable manuals that I have read in a very long time. It is nice to see a realistic manual for a change, that simply just shows you how to do it, without pictures of beaches & smug people standing by sports cars. It is a rarity." Richard Bullivant

"I recently purchased a copy of your book ''Make Money Tearing Up Old Books and Magazines', and have enjoyed it thoroughly. This is one of the best written, easiest to understand, eBooks I have ever purchased. I have a lot of new ideas and am working on some old books I have around the house." Lee Overton (USA

Back to the story

Auction over and a nice profit made , Paul very carefully parceled the item , remember that he has done this many hundreds of time over the years and knew how to pack.
With in hours of the successful bidder receiving his parcel the scam started. Paul received an email informing him that on opening the parcel the item was broken , and in no uncertain terms informing Paul that if this was not sorted very quickly
then he would leave negative feed back as well as informing the auction site concerned and demanding a refund.

As anybody that has traded on an auction site will know feed back can make or break you
and is the last thing you want to see against your name especially if you make a living on line .
Straight away this got Paul's hackles up and he felt something was not right , yes sometimes things did get broken in transit but Paul knew that the way he parcel's items up that it would have to been run over by a steam roller to break. Paul replied to his buyers email asking that he repackage the item up and send it back , and on receipt of the item Paul would refund his purchase.

On receipt of the parcel Paul opened it and straight away knew this had not be broken in transit , he surmised from the chip on the base that this had been dropped or knocked over from where it had been displayed.
Then taking the item and putting it under a special light Paul knew for certain that this was not his Lladro.
You see this same scam happened to Paul long before online auction's , but back then he did not know what to do about it and lost a valuable item plus granted a refund .

It was only after talking to a friend in the same line of business that Paul found out about , UV markers pen's. This makes an invisible mark that can only be seen with a special ultra - violet lamp so it won't devalue or spoil valuable property .
A UV pen and lamp can be brought for a few pounds from most good stationer stores.
A good investment to protect your property from thieves.

The completion to Paul's story is that he reported this to both the police and the auction site ..

Now do not get me wrong the majority of people on auction sites are as honest as you and me but you need to beware that there are thieves out there and you need to know the scams and what you can do to protect yourself from suffering a loss.

I hope this has been helpful to you ,until next week.

How Much is That Pot in the Window

Okay i know the song say,s dog but give me some poetic license here.
There is a window but no dog just a small pot, a pot that has sat on the windowsill for sometime. The owners thought the pot was colourful but of no real value. It was first purchaased for a few shillings in the Fifties, a valuer saw the pot ten years ago and said "that it was worthless" said the owner who did not want to be named, i would also think that the first valuer would not not want to be named either.

For as it turns out the Pot is a Chinese wine jug from the reign of the Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795).

It stands 7.5in high, pink-patterned with a broad mouth, no handle and is decorated with Buddhist symbols and lotus flowers.
Luckily for the unnamed owner Guy Schwinge of auctioneers Duke's in Dorchester,Dorset recognised the significance of the ceremonial wine ewer, when valuing the owners other possessions after they recently put their house up for sale. The ewer will be entered for auction on February 15th," this rare survival is certain to attract interest on a global scale" says Guy Schwinge.

Oh and to answer my opening question How Much is That Pot in the Window, it is expected to fetch the better side of £100,00.
